Creation of the Moyen-Bafing National Park
West African chimpanzees were classified as “critically endangered” by the IUCN in
September 2016 following a decrease in populations in the region of more than 80% in 20 years (Kuehl et al. 2017).
Faced with this situation, the importance for the conservation of the chimpanzee population in Middle
Bafing, which is by far the largest continuous population of this subspecies, is emphasized. Faced with this
situation and faced with the commitment of the Government of Guinea to put 15% of its land
surface under protection status, the Minister of Environment, Water and Forests signed the ministerial decree establishing a process to create the Moyen-Bafing National Park on September 28, 2017 (No
A/2017/5232/MEEF/SGG).
This decree specifies the provisional geographical boundaries and says that the implementation
of this process will be carried out by OGUIpar in collaboration with the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF) (Article 18).
He specifies that, among other things, one of the tasks will be to propose the methods of managing this park (article 3).
