Influence of ecosystem services on protected areas
Nature conservation in the South was institutionalized at the end of the 19th century, in a colonial framework of territorial consolidation by the European occupier. In sub-Saharan Africa, where a genuine system of protected areas was developing the earliest, nature conservation was, until the 1950s, mainly based on hunting or forest reserves, where sport hunting or state wood management practices were opposed to the “wild” or “archaic” practices of local populations.
