Guinea Piscivorous Bird Colony
Along the West African coast is a major resurgence zone extending from Mauritania to Guinea (Sahelian Upwelling Marine Ecoregion — SUME). The marine domain in question is characterized by high biological productivity and is therefore very rich in fish. These fish-rich waters attract numerous predators such as fish-eating birds. This makes it a very important area for pelicans, cormorants, spoonbills, herons, seagulls, and terns nesting in colonies on remote islands. In addition, SUME is important as a wintering and resting area during the migrations of birds breeding in Nordic countries. Most Spoonbills, Caugek Terns, Common Terns and Black Terns breeding in Europe use this area extensively during their migration and wintering.
