Mangrove Management Project: Forest Management Plan
In 1989, the Republic of Guinea received assistance from the Commission of the European Communities (C.C.E.) to conduct a study of its coastline in order to draw up the Mangrove Management Plan (S.D.A.M.). This master plan proposed the main guidelines for the management of the Guinean mangrove. Its implementation was achieved in 1992 by the effective start of the Pilot Project for the Management of Mangroves in Sangareya Bay, a project managed by the National Directorate of Forests and Hunting (DNFC) and entirely financed by the European Community. Sangareya Bay, located some 20 kilometers northeast of Conakry, contains nearly 32,000 hectares of mangrove forests. The ever-increasing demands for wood energy and arable rice land have led to an increase in human pressure on this natural environment and its deforestation. This degradation of the ecosystem, resulting above all from human and socio-economic factors, calls for spatial planning.
