Marine Protected Areas and Freedom of the Seas
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, known as Montego Bay, advances the criteria for marine protected areas for the first time. International conferences have multiplied since the 1980s (Convention on Biological Diversity in 2000; World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002...) refining the concept of marine protected areas, and declarations of principle, real ecological awareness, have given rise to the appearance of new theories and complementary concepts, such as that of sustainable development born from the Rio Convention. The human being moves in search of all solutions, not to give up natural resources, but to be part of a sustainable management policy that promotes both the use and the sustainability of the environment.
