the content of this guide brings together the experience acquired during the establishment of forest groups, which was mainly undertaken from 1995 to 1997 as part of the Upper Gambia and Upper Niger Watershed Projects.
One of the objectives of this project was centered on the development of a formula allowing rural populations to
manage their forest areas by themselves with the support of the forest administration. This objective has been pursued
carefully in order to ensure the sustainability of the groups.
